International conference People and the Sea: Maritime research in the social sciences - an agenda for the 21st century

Organisers:Centre for Maritime Research (MARE) and SISWO/Netherlands Institute for the Social Sciences Scope:Participants in the three-day international conference examined cross-disciplinary issues in maritime research. Core sessions focused on the following topics:
ProgramMs. J.M. de Vries, state secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works, and Water Management cordially agreed to open the conference. In three plenary sessions, keynote speakers addressed current topics in maritime social-science research. Together, they helped set an agenda for the future. The keynote speakers were Prof. Biliana Cicin-Sain (University of Delaware, USA), Dr. John Kurien (Center for Development Studies, India), and Prof. Jean-Philippe Platteau (University of Namur, Belgium). The conference included forty panel sessions on a wide variety of topics, as well as a small film program. It was attended by 155 academics from all parts of the world, representing all major social science disciplines.
